Gold for Canada

My wife thinks I'm somewhat hard to buy for, and even harder to surprise. However, this Christmas, she managed to do both with an all-event pass to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Tournament in Toronto.

We took in several exciting round robin games, but things definitely became more thrilling when Team Canada (who played their round robin games in Montreal) arrived last Friday for their quarter final. The building was loud and energetic as they witnessed their home team decisively beat Denmark, 8-0.

The excitement built as our Canadian boys continued to go undefeated with their 5-1 win over Slovakia, and the Americans were knocked out by the Russians. That set up the championship for gold between Canada and Russia yesterday.

The crowd was rocking and loud, and got louder with each thunderous check or home team goal. I was especially rooting for Max Domi, due to my connection with the London Knights. He had a strong tournament, and rose to the occasion, delivering big-time to hold off a determined Russian team in a nail-biter.

The gold medal drought for Canada ended, as they were victorious over the tenacious Russians, 5-4. Witnessing a piece of history was so surreal, and I'm entirely thrilled to have been part of the experience. Way to go, Canada!
